Here in Finland, we have short summers and long winters, this gives us much time to develop new features and reinvent marine navigation. We are pleased to tell you that we have accomplished a lot!

For the spring update 2023, we have focused on expanding the functionality between the Q App and Q Display. We are quite excited to see what our users think of the over-the-air expansions available through the Q App! In addition, we have made many improvements to the navigation and reduced the number of screen presses needed to perform tasks while driving.

Subscriptions

The Q Display really comes to life when combined with an internet connection. Nobody wants the hassle with internet service providers when one should be out at sea – this is why we integrated the on-demand Q Connected connection in the Q App.

Q Connected is a truly hassle-free solution for keeping your boat connected through the whole season! With Q Connected you enable the following features in your Q Display and in your Q App:

In the Q Display:

  • Automatic software updates – always keep your Q Display up to date
  • Mobile application connection – connection to the mobile application
  • Q Guard surveillance – real-time surveillance of your boat, no matter where you are
  • Weather reports – automatic warnings when the weather takes a turn for the worse
  • Support for add-on features – e.g., Cloud AIS and Limitation areas
  • WLAN Hotspot – WLAN onboard, perfect for a workday at sea
  • Google place search – find gas stations, restaurants, and other services with ease directly on your Q Display

In the Mobile application:

  • Real-time boat status:
    • Location – see your boats location in real-time
    • Battery voltage & low voltage warning – monitor your battery voltage in real-time, and get a warning when the voltage drops too low
    • Fuel level – see the current fuel level to know if you have to plan a fuel stop or not
  • Guard surveillance:
    • Location alarm – get notified if your boat leaves the mooring
    • Engine theft alarm – get notified if a thief tries to steal your outboard engine
    • Bilge water level alarm – get notified if the bilge starts filling with water while your boat is moored
    • Battery disconnection alarm – get notified if a thief disconnects your battery, or Q Display, in hopes of disarming Q Guard surveillance
  • Trip logbook & season summary – automatically syncs all your driven trips with your mobile application, and summarizes your season
  • Automatic service book – get all your service data in your mobile application
  • Engine information & alarm log – missed an engine alarm while driving? No problem, the alarm is saved in the mobile engine alarm log

Add-on features

If you are anything like us, you do not settle for basic. You want more – we give you more.

For the ones that feel that the default features in the Q Display are not enough, for you, we bring add-on features that can be activated through the Q App.

Under Subscriptions in the Q App, you will find two new expansions for the Q Display: Limitation areas Finland, Cloud AIS, and more coming soon!

Limitation areas (Finland)

Get up to speed, but at the right speed.

The Limitation Areas subscription shows the current limitations in your area directly on your chart, such as speed limits, no-wake zones, or prohibition of anchoring.

On the sea, and especially in the archipelago, the limitation signs are difficult to spot in bushes on the shore. The Limitation Areas subscription brings these signs directly in front of you on the screen. Even better, the Limitation Areas subscription even tells you when the limitations end, no more guessing.
By tapping on the on-screen Limitation area sign, you can see the whole limitation area on the chart.

NOTE: currently only available in Finland

Cloud AIS

See who you share the sea with – for safety and leisure.

The Cloud AIS subscription brings AIS targets to the Q Display’s chart, without the need for an external AIS receiver.

Traditionally an AIS receiver would be necessary to view AIS targets on the chart. With the Cloud AIS subscription, you skip the hassle with installing the AIS receiver, and still see all the available AIS targets!

Collision warnings – Cloud AIS alerts you if you are on a collision course with another ship.

In case of a MOB (Man Overboard) situation, the Q Display will show you the person in distress on the chart, and you will be prompted to navigate to the location.

The Cloud AIS does not send out your position to other AIS users, it is purely a way to view AIS targets on the chart.

New Features

The new features for this season are aimed at making your user experience even better. The new features range from IP Camera support to improved navigation safety by introducing highlight colors to indicate that attention is needed from the skipper.

The most notable new features and quality-of-life improvements are:

  • Q Digital Switch users can now attach shortcuts to their most-used switches directly on the widgets panel – no more changing applications to turn off the lights!
  • IP Camera support – you can now attach IP Cameras to your Q Display to stay aware of your surroundings.
  • Navigation line highlight – The navigation line is now highlighted to differentiate the trail and navigation line from each other. The highlight colours are green, yellow, and red, depending on how much caution is needed at respective places

Q App

The Q App has gotten a complete makeover and a heap of new features for the 2023 season!

The new homepage has a smart new layout to give you all relevant information at a glance. The app has a card-style layout where you can customize what cards you want to have accessible and which you want to hide. Here you can also add a profile picture for your boat to get a personalized feel in the Q App.

If you prefer a more technical view the status gauges can be brought up to show the boat status in place of the picture – clear, simple, and smart.

Subscriptions

The change we are most excited about is the new subscriptions – extend the Q Display to meet your demands!

The subscriptions can be activated in the Q App and then add functionality to the Q Display. This is the world’s first in the marine market. The subscriptions that will be available at the season start in 2023 are Q Connected, Limitation areas (Finland), and Cloud AIS.

Q Connected

Q Connected is your connection to your boat. This subscription activates the 4G/LTE connection on your Q Display so that it can communicate with your Q App. This subscription is the backbone of Q Experience, creating an always-connected boating experience!

Limitation Areas (Finland)

This subscription shows all the speed limits and limitations on the sea, directly on your Q Display’s chart. We want you to be safe and knowing that you and every Q Display user around you has access to the limitations of the water helps everybody stay out of harm’s way. It might even keep the costal guard happier with your driving.

Cloud AIS

Knowing where the larger vessels are is essential for safe boating. Until now this has only been possible by installing an AIS receiver. With Cloud AIS the tedious installation work is a thing of the past, with Cloud AIS you get all nearby AIS-equipped vessel locations on your chart – including MOB alerts and collision warnings!

Q Guard

Q Guard has been made easier to understand and manage. The new layout allows for a quick overlook and by opening the Q Guard log you can see all the warnings and alarms that you might have missed.

In the Location card, you can see the exact location of your boat in real-time and share the location with your friends and family – incredibly useful for shared boats!

Trip Logbook

In the renewed trip logbook, you can sort your trips by season or choose to show all trips. These trips can then be downloaded or shared with friends. At the top of the screen, you have a useful summary of your current list of trips so that you can stay on top of your boating or compete with your friends.

Choosing an individual trip will give you specific trip information, as well as the option to share the trip with your friends. The trip will then be exported as a GPX file. If you are a little more technical, this file can be utilized for any purpose you want, such as creating a poster with all your trips at the end of the season!

Engine

A power boat is nothing without its engine. To make sure that you always get notified about possible engine alarms, we added a new card with the engine information, service book, and alarm log.

In the engine information, you will get the engine hours directly from the engine so that you accurately can tell when a service is due.

When a service partner performs a service on your engine and adds the service to the Q Display’s service log, you will see the service information in your Q App – perfect for checking what service was done during the winter.

If you ever miss an engine alarm on your Q Display, do not worry, it will automatically be stored in your Q App’s engine alarm log. This will keep you on top of the condition of your engine to avoid any unnecessary damage.

Remote Control

Some appliances work best if they are turned on before arriving at the harbor. With the new remote control features you can easily turn selected appliances before arriving at your boat, for example heaters, fridges, lights, or even ice cube machines!

Q Lock

If you want to be sure that your Q Display can not be used by anyone not authorized, you can remotely lock the Q Display with a PIN code from the Q App. Just insert the code and toggle the lock!

The Lock can be opened either in the Q Display or in the Q App.
